SANDAKAN: Five families here are facing a bleak Hari Raya after fire destroyed their homes in two separate incidents here.
In the first incident, oil palm smallholder Tiapsah Said and her family of nine escaped unhurt when their wooden house burnt down at 10pm on Friday.
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Services Department officer-in-charge Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad said five firemen in a fire-engine rushed to the house, located at Suan Lamba, about 80km from here, and managed to put out the fire more than an hour later.
In the second incident on the same day, a blaze swept through the workers quarters at the Seguntor industrial area at about 5.20am.
Sixteen firemen in three fire-engines were rushed to the scene and put out the fire at about 8.40am.
Mohd Razali said 25 people from four families lost their homes in the blaze.
