MrFang News 151 factories without fire certs in Penang

A TOTAL of 151 factories in Pe-nang were found to be operating without a Fire Certifi-cate (FC) from January 2009 to June this year.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Hamzah Abu Bakar said another 190 factories were issued with warning notices on fire prevention, while three were brought to court for failing to comply with the noti-ces.

He said this when launching the Fire Safety Seminar by the Penang Fire and Rescue Department at the Tabung Haji Complex in Bayan Lepas on Thursday.

Hamzah also said his department had taken more steps to make it easier for people especially premises owners to implement and observe the rules and regulations concerning fire safety.
He said the department published a guidebook in June this year which details the proper fire safety guidelines.

The guidebook, which is on sale for RM50 per copy at the state Fire and Rescue Department, also contains a list of vendors for fire safety equipment as approved by the Federal Government.
He added that his department would be conducting more routine checks on premises especially with the festive season around the corner.

During the seminar, Hamzah called on his personnel to provide a higher level of service to the people.
The department’s Penang liaison officer Izwan Ariff revealed that approximately RM56mil in properties were lost to fire hazards nationwide last June.

But he added that an estimated RM600mil worth of properties were saved by the department.
Izwan said efforts by the department to educate the public on prank calls continue to bear fruit with 33 calls nationwide in June compared to 45 in May.
